After active treatment wraps up and the braces come off, it is time for the passive stage of treatment, called retention. During this phase, we use retainers to hold the teeth in their new positions until the bones, gums, and ligaments firm up to keep them from migrating back to their original spots.

How long retainers must be worn will vary from person to person. Some people need to wear them for a year, others for several years, and others still for life.

It is vital that patients wear their retainers as directed, as not doing so will compromise the quality of their results. They must be cleaned properly and stored safely when not worn. If a retainer is damaged, come see us as soon as possible.
